Beverly drinks reservoir water, not well water, and the Salem and Beverly Water Supply Board holds corrosion in check by adjusting pH and dosing a phosphate additive rather than by mineral hardness. The City's own water regulations are specific about what goes in the ground: every domestic water service from 1 inch to 2 inches must be entirely Type K copper, 4 inch and larger must be Class 52 cement-lined ductile iron, and plastic is considered only case by case — with a Water or Engineering Department inspection required before backfill. Road salt shows in the finished water, which tested 53 ppm sodium in 2025 against MassDEP's 20 ppm guideline, and manganese came in at 46 ppb against a 50 ppb secondary limit, which is why a water main break in Beverly can put discolored water into a house. With more than a third of Beverly's homes built in 1939 or earlier, most of the pipe behind the wall is older than the regulations governing what replaces it.

Beverly's Rules and Regulations for the Water System require domestic water services from 1" to 2" to be entirely Type K copper; 4" and larger must be Class 52 cement-lined ductile iron; plastic pipe 'may be considered on a case by case basis' and must be rated for 200 psi with stainless sleeves, brass compression fittings and tracer wire. Manganese measured 46 ppb against a 50 ppb secondary limit, and odor measured 12 T.O.N. against a secondary limit of 3.

The same 2025 report explains that manganese accumulates over time in the pipes serving customers, and that 'flow changes from construction, use of hydrants, and water main breaks can stir up that material and contribute to these temporary events of discolored water,' advising customers to run cold water from the lowest point in the home until it clears.

Under Beverly's Cross Connection Control Program Ordinance (Article XXXI), the property owner bears the cost of testing backflow prevention devices, and failure to pay for two or more billing quarters results in the bill being added to the property tax as a lien. Owners of residential premises with a private well are not allowed any physical cross-connection with the public water supply system.

Spencer Home Services put in a new main sewer line for me last August. Over the winter, the street patch settled a bit and started turning into a pothole. I called them up to see if they’d fix it under their warranty, and they were awesome about it. First, they sent someone out two weeks ago to run a camera down the whole pipe. They wanted to make sure the shifting dirt didn't cause any sagging or bellies underground, and they did the inspection with absolutely no pushback or extra fees. Once we confirmed the pipe was in perfect shape, they scheduled a crew to come back today to fix the road. They cut a clean square and put down a really solid, hot asphalt patch that's completely level with the street. I couldn’t be more grateful for the team from Spencer who came out after Monday’s blizzard to complete our CIPP sewer line repair. Oscar, Cesar, Chuck, and Bryan (who plowed out the driveway) were outstanding from start to finish! They addressed a sewer line with multiple root intrusions that had been causing blockages, as well as a cavity in the old cast iron pipe that was allowing runoff to leak back through the foundation and into the house. The team thoroughly prepped the line by clearing the roots and descaling the pipe. Once done, they shot the new pipe in and cured it so that we have a single continuous sewer line pipe to the city main. They also removed the aging cast iron wye connection and replaced it with a new PVC fitting. Throughout the entire process, they were incredibly kind, patient, and professional. I asked a lot of questions, and they were happy to walk me through everything - from the materials being used, to how measurements are taken, how the resin is applied, and how the curing process works. I truly appreciated the education and transparency. I now have a much better understanding of my home’s sewer system and the work that was done. They were also very respectful of our home, keeping the work areas clean and carefully protecting our light-colored carpet with drop cloths. After the work was done, they cleaned up everything and it was almost like they weren't here at all. They treated our home like it was their own. Also, thank you as well to Rich, who came out on Saturday to assess the situation and scope the line, and to Angel and the front office staff who answered my questions over the weekend on timing for the job and if a plow would be possible.
