Signs the blockage is in the main line

One slow sink is usually a local clog. These signs point to the main line that every drain in the house shares. We confirm the cause at your home.

  • Several drains back up togetherA line they all share

The tub, the toilets and the sinks slow down, gurgle or back up at the same time.

When separate fixtures react together, the blockage is usually past the individual drains, in the main line they all feed into.

  • Sewage shows up at the lowest fixtureThe lowest opening backs up first

Water or sewage appears at a basement floor drain, a tub or a shower.

The lowest drain in the house is where a blocked main line shows itself first. Stop using water and call.

  • The backups keep coming backA cause further down the line

The whole house drains again for a while, then slows down once more.

A backup that keeps returning can mean the cause sits further down the line than the first clearing reached. The camera shows what is there.

What a main sewer line cleaning visit looks like

Four steps from the first call to a line that drains again.

  1. Tell us what is backing up

Call or send the form with the address and which drains are affected. If sewage is coming up, stop using water until we arrive.

  2. We find where it is blocked

We check the affected fixtures, find the sewer cleanout or other access to the main line, and work out where the blockage sits.

  3. We clear the line

The line is cleared with hydro-jetting or cabling, whichever suits what is in it.

  4. Camera look and next steps

The camera is free on every drain call. You see what it shows and hear whether cleaning is enough or a repair or replacement is worth discussing.

What changes the work and the price?

The technician gives you the price before work starts. These are the things that most often change the work.

  • Access to the line

A reachable sewer cleanout, or other clear access to the main line, makes the work faster to set up.

  • Where the blockage is

How far down the line it sits and how severe it is change the work.

  • Pipe length, size and condition

A longer or older line, or one in poor condition, can take more work.

  • The method needed

Cabling and hydro-jetting are different jobs. You hear which one fits and the price before work begins.

Our work is backed by a lifetime workmanship warranty for the typical lifespan of the installation. Terms apply.

How we do sewer cleaning, and what can follow

The method depends on what is in the line and how it can be reached. If clearing is not the whole answer, you hear that before any further work.

  • Cabling

A cable run through the line breaks up and pulls out many blockages and restores flow.

  • Hydro-jetting

High-pressure water scours the inside of the pipe when the blockage or buildup needs more than a cable.

  • Repair or replace afterwards

If the camera shows a damaged or failed section, we go over the repair and replacement options with you before any further work.

Main sewer line cleaning questions, answered

Direct answers to what homeowners ask when the main line backs up.

Call 978-293-5770
  • Is there a dispatch fee for a drain call?

No. There is no dispatch fee for a drain call during normal hours, whether it is a clogged drain, a backup or another drain problem. The technician gives you the price for the repair on the spot, before any work starts.

  • How much does main sewer line cleaning cost?

There is no dispatch fee, so you pay only for the work you approve. The technician looks at the main line and gives you the price on the spot, before any work starts.

  • How often should a main sewer line be cleaned?

There is no fixed schedule. Lines with tree roots, older pipe or repeat backups may need regular cleaning. A camera inspection shows what is in the line and whether a schedule makes sense.

  • What is a sewer cleanout, and where is mine?

A sewer cleanout is the capped access pipe to the main line. It is usually in the basement near where the line leaves the house, or outside near the foundation. The technician locates it on the visit.

  • What causes a sewer backup, and what should I do?

Common causes are tree roots, grease, wipes and other items that should not be flushed, and sagging or broken pipe. Stop running water and call. A backup at the lowest drain in the house is the usual first sign.

  • Is the camera extra?

No. The camera is free on every drain call.

  • Is there a fee for an after-hours drain call?

Yes. After-hours drain calls carry the $389 after-hours dispatch fee ($194.50 for Service Partner Plan members), waived when we do the repair. Estimates stay free.
