Kensington has no municipal sewer of any kind — the town's own Natural Resources Inventory states that all wastewater produced in Kensington is treated by septic systems. Because of that, the town takes an unusually direct role in septic work: Kensington appoints a Septic System Inspector / Test Pit Witness who inspects the plans and installation of every septic system in town, witnesses all test pits and percolation tests, and must approve the system before it is covered over. New Hampshire operates under RSA 485-A and NHDES rules rather than Massachusetts Title 5, and within Kensington's Aquifer Protection District the design bar is higher still.

Kensington zoning provides that 'No septage, waste or sludge disposal system shall be located in wetland soil as defined by the Town of Kensington Wetland Ordinance. No structure of any kind shall be placed on wetland soil as defined by the Town of Kensington wetland ordinance' (Zoning Ordinance Section 3.2, amended 3-06-26), and septage, waste or sludge disposal is a prohibited use within the Wetland and Hydric Soils Conservation District (Section 6.1.5 B). The ordinance sets wetland separation as structure setbacks — no structure within 100 feet of Hydric A soils or within 50 feet of Hydric B soils (Section 6.1.6 C and D) — and requires that no component of a septic system be located less than 35 feet from a property line, easement or right of way, with no filling of wetlands allowed to provide the minimum distance of septic to wetlands. The town's 2014 Natural Resources Inventory notes that septic systems 'have a finite useful life until replacement is needed; unfortunately replacement is seldom done until the system fails.'

Kensington sets residential lot size by soil type per Table #1 of its Subdivision Regulations, with soil types determined by a qualified Soil Scientist using published soil data plus on-site inspection as necessary. The town's master plan notes that glacial till with dense impermeable layers is poorly suited to septic placement, particularly where the till layer is within two feet of the ground surface, and that marine clays and silts produce a water table at or near the ground surface.

Spencer Home Services put in a new main sewer line for me last August. Over the winter, the street patch settled a bit and started turning into a pothole. I called them up to see if they’d fix it under their warranty, and they were awesome about it. First, they sent someone out two weeks ago to run a camera down the whole pipe. They wanted to make sure the shifting dirt didn't cause any sagging or bellies underground, and they did the inspection with absolutely no pushback or extra fees. Once we confirmed the pipe was in perfect shape, they scheduled a crew to come back today to fix the road. They cut a clean square and put down a really solid, hot asphalt patch that's completely level with the street. I couldn’t be more grateful for the team from Spencer who came out after Monday’s blizzard to complete our CIPP sewer line repair. Oscar, Cesar, Chuck, and Bryan (who plowed out the driveway) were outstanding from start to finish! They addressed a sewer line with multiple root intrusions that had been causing blockages, as well as a cavity in the old cast iron pipe that was allowing runoff to leak back through the foundation and into the house. The team thoroughly prepped the line by clearing the roots and descaling the pipe. Once done, they shot the new pipe in and cured it so that we have a single continuous sewer line pipe to the city main. They also removed the aging cast iron wye connection and replaced it with a new PVC fitting. Throughout the entire process, they were incredibly kind, patient, and professional. I asked a lot of questions, and they were happy to walk me through everything - from the materials being used, to how measurements are taken, how the resin is applied, and how the curing process works. I truly appreciated the education and transparency. I now have a much better understanding of my home’s sewer system and the work that was done. They were also very respectful of our home, keeping the work areas clean and carefully protecting our light-colored carpet with drop cloths. After the work was done, they cleaned up everything and it was almost like they weren't here at all. They treated our home like it was their own. Also, thank you as well to Rich, who came out on Saturday to assess the situation and scope the line, and to Angel and the front office staff who answered my questions over the weekend on timing for the job and if a plow would be possible.
